Kaleidoscopes are much more than just a childhood toy. These devices have been used to stir the imagination of people of all ages, all over the world, for nearly two centuries.

Building a kaleidoscope offers a unique opportunity to both entertain and educate viewers, and it’s an activity that is easier than you might imagine.

Kaleidoscopes can be made from a vast assortment of materials which are available at a wide range of price points. They also come in many shapes and sizes, although the stereotypical design is tubular and resembles a small telescope or spyglass.

Inside this device, mirrors or other reflective surfaces are mounted together with a holder that can hold objects of different colours and textures. The operation of the device demonstrates many common properties of optics, such as the refraction of light and the concept of symmetry to produce intricate and often brightly coloured patterns and designs.

By helping your children to design and create their own kaleidoscope, you can help them learn more about the scientific principals behind how many common items work while also stimulating their creativity and having fun.

The Seeing Stars Kaleidoscope Kit, comes with everything that you need to help your children to build their very own kaleidoscope kit while also helping your children to learn more about some of the key concepts of optics such as focus and reflection as well as colour combinations and pattern making.

This kit is suitable for use by children aged four and older and its assembled dimensions are 22cm x 7cm.  Once assembled, the kaleidoscope looks like a spyglass but when your child looks through it, a whole new world is waiting for them.

No matter how many times your child operates their kaleidoscope, it is unlikely that any specific image will ever be exactly reproduced twice, which leads to hours of fun.

1320291719Bobble_Art_Kids_Drawstring_Bag_ButterflyDepending on where you live around Australia, your children may have returned to school this week.  You’ve probably stocked up on exercise books and pencils, but did you remember to buy a multipurpose bag?

Library & Swim Bags are a great accessory for school and we have a great selection available.  These bags are useful  for carrying around the heavy and awkward library books they borrow when at school or when they need to carry their swimming gear and towel when they go swimming.

These bags are made from nylon and are lined with polyester and have an internal mesh pocket.  They also have a draw string opening that means any item placed in the bag will be safely kept in place and not likely to fall out and get lost.  They are also very durable.

rocket_swim_library_bagWhile these bags are suited for carrying library books as well as swimming gear they are also perfect if your kids may be staying over at a friend’s place and they need to take along some spare clothes, toys or anything else they may need.  Plus they are also practical when you are travelling and you need to keep the kids entertained as they can also carry food, games, pens and pencils.

Woodland_library_bagThese bags are also easy to store as they have a hook for hanging and they have an internal name tag so they won’t lost.  Some of the designs we currently have in stock are the Butterfly, Woodland and Rocket bags as pictured here.

Follow this link to the Library & Swim Bags section and have a look at the other designs we have in stock.  These handy little bags definitely make life easier – and take our word for it, you may even need more than one!

Aren’t these great?  We love them.

This is called ‘A World to Discover’.  It is a customised world map for your child’s room.  As you can see in the picture, the map is customised by adding your child’s name to the map.

This is so clever because not only does it look great, it is educational.  Together you can explore the world from the comfort of your child’s room.  Inspire your Indiana Jones or Dora the Explorer to find different parts of the world.

This A3 sized poster is printed with an ‘aged paper’ background to give your child the feeling of being an old-world discoverer!  It is a gift that suits all ages (yes, it doesn’t have to be for the kids!) and it suits both boys and girls.

The print measures 297 × 420mm (11.7 × 16.5 inches) and is printed on 160gsm archival, Chlorine Free (ECF) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper.  It will come to you in either a hard mailing tube or a sturdy flat mailer.

This map is from MySweetPrints and was created here in Australia.

Order yours today and tuck it away for Christmas.

Today I want to show you something different and quite special.

If you spent time playing with your grandparents old toys or you love pottering around antique shops, you might have come across something like these.  If you didn’t, it’s possible that you’ve never seen them before.

These are toys made of tin as many toys were in “the olden days.”  That makes them very sturdy and durable.  Today they are listed as suitable for children over 14 because they may have sharp edges and small parts.  St John Toys are made for life so I see these as collectable items that your child would keep for life.

This is Roxy the Tin Robot and she is on sale at the moment for only $10.  She reminds me of the robot maid from the old cartoon “The Jetsons.”

She is a pretty shade of pink, has spiky spring hair, a little tin dress and a frilly white apron.  She wears stylish and jaunty red shoes.  Roxy is a miniature robot, measuring 14 cm x 5.5cm.

This is the Snow White Carousel which is bright and colourful.  It’s a very whimsical piece that could easily have belonged to your grandparents.  It has a definite old world charm about it.  Slide the lever and the three dwarfs spin out wide for a decent length of time!   The carousel is beautifully painted with plenty of detail and would be a lovely decorative item for a child’s room.   It measures 11cm x 10cm and is on sale for only $8.95.

You don’t easily find toys or collectables like this any more which is a shame.  Luckily for you we have them in stock until they sell out.

lunch mail, Lunch Love, mail, inspirational messages
I don’t know about you, but I can still remember the lunches my mum used to send me off to school with. Carefully packed to withstand the test of time (that is, until recess) in a colourful plastic box carefully hand-picked that morning before school.

During the hot summers she would often freeze the juice box to keep the precious cargo nice and cold until such time that they would be happily devoured. Or swapped for someone else’s. And I distinctly remember that every now and then I would find a little paper note tucked away with my lunch. It was inevitably stuck to the defrosting fruit box and becoming increasingly transparent but just legible enough to make out the words of love and encouragement.

Whatever may have been bothering me at the time (life is pretty tough when you’re eight years old) it didn’t seem so bad once I knew my mum was still there for me. Now, Moo Woo offers carefully crafted precious gestures in a colourful pop-open card, each containing an inspirational message for your little one when you can’t be there with them.

These little letters do wonders for your child’s self-esteem, too. On those days when they cop a self-confidence battering from their peers (and you know what that feels like) a little lunch mail can bring a secret message that helps them to cope.

lunch mail, mail with love, inspirational messages

Lunch Mail contains 30 window cards which can be secretly popped into backpacks, pockets, and lunchboxes for anytime when you know a little boost will go a long way. Plus there’s a little space for your own message or nick name too – something special just from you.

These are beautiful parcels of love, carefully delivered, without getting stuck to the back of a fruit box.
