Today I want to show you something different and quite special.

If you spent time playing with your grandparents old toys or you love pottering around antique shops, you might have come across something like these.  If you didn’t, it’s possible that you’ve never seen them before.

These are toys made of tin as many toys were in “the olden days.”  That makes them very sturdy and durable.  Today they are listed as suitable for children over 14 because they may have sharp edges and small parts.  St John Toys are made for life so I see these as collectable items that your child would keep for life.

This is Roxy the Tin Robot and she is on sale at the moment for only $10.  She reminds me of the robot maid from the old cartoon “The Jetsons.”

She is a pretty shade of pink, has spiky spring hair, a little tin dress and a frilly white apron.  She wears stylish and jaunty red shoes.  Roxy is a miniature robot, measuring 14 cm x 5.5cm.

This is the Snow White Carousel which is bright and colourful.  It’s a very whimsical piece that could easily have belonged to your grandparents.  It has a definite old world charm about it.  Slide the lever and the three dwarfs spin out wide for a decent length of time!   The carousel is beautifully painted with plenty of detail and would be a lovely decorative item for a child’s room.   It measures 11cm x 10cm and is on sale for only $8.95.

You don’t easily find toys or collectables like this any more which is a shame.  Luckily for you we have them in stock until they sell out.

Did you know that Australians generate almost 70 kg of plastic waste per person every year?  It’s a huge amount, isn’t it?  But look around you, in your pantry and in your fridge and you will see that everything is being packaged up in containers these days, many of which are not recyclable.

What are we teaching our children?  What sort of world are we leaving them?

The first thing we can do is to change the way we shop.  By buying foods which have less packaging it’s quite likely we will be choosing products which are more nutritious, too.   That can only be a good thing, can’t it?

The next thing to do is change the way you pack those school lunches.  Ban plastics and packaging.  Stop using cling wrap and plastic water bottles.  Instead, choose materials that you can use over and over again.

Have a look at our range of reusable lunch and snack bags.  You will love them because they make lunches very easy to pack and there is no sticky cling film to fight with!

Built Big Apple Buddies have developed a funky range of bags especially for sandwiches.  They are free of PVC, BPA, latex and vinyl.  They are easy to clean with a wipe out or even by popping them into the dishwasher.  They close with a sturdy Velcro seal.

We also have bright and colourful patterned reusable bags in sizes suitable for lunches, pieces of fruit or snacks.  They have a zip closure and a 100% cotton designer fabric exterior with thick and lush PVC-Free waterproof lining interior.  Your kids will love them.

You might not think that changing to reusable lunch bags will make much difference but think of the example you are setting to the next generation.  They will learn to treat the world better than we have.  It is a simple change that will actually make a significant difference to our environment in the long-term.

Following on from our last post about good hydration I want to tell you more about the Thermos Funtainer.  We love it and think you will, too.

Thermos Funtainers are 355ml capacity drink bottles which are designed for action.  They are leakproof and have a pop-up silicone straw to drink through.  Thermos is a very popular brand of drink container.  I remember my parents having the reliable old thermos ready to take with them whenever we went out for a picnic.  It kept drinks cold or it kept them hot (the essential coffee).  The Funtainers are just as reliable.

The bottles are vacuum insulated for food safety and have a double walled stainless steel inner and outer – which keeps contents cold for up to 12 hours!  They are fabulous in summer and for the warm climates such as we have here in Kunanurra.

More features include:

– Hygienic push button lid with pop-up silicone straw is easy to open.
– Kid Proof Design – Unbreakable Stainless Steel withstands daily wear and tear.
– Dishwasher safe
– Exterior stays condensation free.
– Non Slip, Scratch Resistant Base.
– Part will be ordered upon request
– BPA free

The Thermos Funtainer is suitable for any child who can drink from a straw.  It’s tough but it’s easy to use.  It’s excellent for special outings such as picnics or for regular use at school.  It comes with a range of decorations including Action Blue or Mod Floral pink.  They are just some of the cool drink containers from our Thermos range.

Water is essential for life. Not just plants, but humans as well. In fact, humans can only survive a few days without water.

Given that our bodies are made up of 75% fluids which help to keep blood flowing easily around our body, our cells nice and rounded and our brain functioning adequately, it is important to remain hydrated.

Big people know when we’re thirsty and we can easily help ourselves to a drink, but children don’t always know the signs.  They can easily become tired and cranky when dehydrated. They need a drink, but may not know how to adequately communicate this.

Establishing good hydration habits can appear hard, especially if we’ve been told to “drink eight glasses of water each day”. It seems overwhelming when put like that, doesn’t it?

Really, it’s just a bottle or two, and the best way to ensure hydration throughout the day is not to drink two litres of water the moment you get up, but to keep water on hand all day. A sip here, land a mouthful there, and at the end of the day, you’re headache free and properly hydrated.

You can help children establish this easy habit by ensuring they have access to water all day, too. Depending on their age, a small bottle they can easily open, without damaging their teeth, or for mobile infants, a sippy cup is perfect.  We love the Thermos leakproof bottles which keep your water cool all day. There’s nothing worse than warm water!

Leave the bottle or sippy cup beside them as they play, without fear of spillage, and encourage them to utilise it. Soon, they’ll be doing it on their own.

A cup of water with meals is also helpful. Of course, setting an example yourself is the perfect encouragement.

You can find more water containers on our website.  They are designed to appeal to kids and if they like the bottle, it’s half the battle won.
